才能というのは、研いでないナイフのようなものだ。

「スタンド・バイ・ミー」「キャリー」「シャイニング」など、ハリウッドで映画化され続けるミステリ界の大御所スティーブン・キング。

高校時代に書いた小説が後に出版されたような、文字通りの天才作家です。すでに30年以上、発表する作品すべてが米国ではベストセラー入り、という本物の「才能」の持ち主。

そのスティーブン・キングは「才能」についてこう語っています。


才能というのは、研いでないナイフのようなものだ。
毎日、ただ毎日書き続ければ、そのナイフを研ぐことができる。

人によってナイフの大きさは違う。
しかし研いでみないことには、そのナイフがどんな形なのかわからない。
小さくてよく切れる果物ナイフなのか。巨大な岩もまっぷたつに切り裂く大ぶりの刀なのか。

才能のある・ないというのは単にこのナイフのサイズのことだ。
大きな刀なら歴史的な大作が書けるだろう。でも小さなナイフでも、本を買ってくれる人を一晩夢中にさせる程度の作品を書くには充分だ。

だからナイフのサイズが問題じゃない。
それが本当にナイフか、つまり「研がれているか」どうかが問題なのだ。

だから大事なことは、ナイフを研ぐこと。毎日書くことである。
